Georgia Voll, an Australian top-order batter, has been signed by UP Warriorz (UPW) to replace Chamari Athapaththu, who will not be available for the latter stages of WPL 2025 due to commitments to her national side.
Athapaththu now heads back home to answer her national call for the tour of New Zealand. Although she is an asset, she has not played for UPW in any of the five matches that have been held this season. The last game she was available for with the franchise was against Mumbai Indians on February 26, which aptly UPW lost. The first ODI match for Sri Lanka against New Zealand is slated for March 4, and thus, she will focus on her international career.
In the meantime, 21-year-old Australian cricketer Georgia Voll was brought in to cover the loss of Athapaththu. She earned her cap against India in three T20 matches, and she has shown mature batting performances in the domestic circuit. In the WBBL 2024-25 season, she scored a total of 330 runs at a mind-blowing strike-rate 144 and became the second run-scorer for her side Sydney Thunder, helping her team to get into the Challenger stage where they lost against Brisbane Heat.
Her stock must have soared further by this achievement in the ODI series against India last December in Australia. Following that, she scored an outstanding century in only her second ODI, thus topping the run-getters for the whole series with 173 runs at an average of 86.50.UPW has contracted her services at INR 30 lakh (about USD 34,350) to hope she bestows depth and steadiness on their batting order.
UP Warriorz are four in WPL points, out of which five teams are in contention. Only two matches won so far have left the team under the pump to augment its position as the tournament moves on. The next match is on March 3, their first match of the season in Lucknow. Voll is an important addition for the team to strengthen its batting and clinch a spot in the knockout stages.
Voll’s aggressive batting and proficiency in handling pressure situations may prove to be a game-changer for UPW. Bringing a lot of mid-order experience from high-pressure leagues such as the WBBL, with good form in international cricket of late, she is likely to sort out the middle order. UPW would look to her along with building solid partnerships and accelerate in crunch situations.
It is tough to bring a worthy replacement for Athapaththu, but UPW has fairly recruited Voll, which goes with the team’s direction. Right through the tournament, the WPL has witnessed many instances where mid-season replacements have played crucial roles in determining the fate of tournaments. Voll is expected to bring stability and much-needed power to the UPW camp to get them through the second half of the season.
