The national football team has released Inter Miami star Lionel Messi for the impending World Championship qualifying matches against Colombia and Chile. With this news, Argentinians feel that their hopes of winning the trophy next year are all but gone. He has not been involved in any action since suffering an ankle injury during the last Copa America final which took place in 2024; this is due to clubs deciding on a wait-and-see approach with him until he fully recovers from his situation.
The Argentine team will sorely miss his experience and goals. Yet, they have exceptionally talented forwards who can replace him. Alejandro Garnacho, Giuliano Simeone, Julian Alvarez, Lautaro Martinez, and Valentin Castellanos are on the brink of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The ankle injury that has kept him on the bench since was incurred during their last match of 2024 Copa America which Argentina won. The game ended with a close victory by Argentina with very little margin. As it can be recalled this victory came at a very high cost: because Messi’s injury has kept him off for some weeks now.

Before the last match he played which was the Copa America final, Messi had missed important matches including Inter Miami’s defense of the Leagues Cup and MLS All-Star Game. The Herons, who are Inter Miami’s team, are expected back on home ground on August 24 against FC Cincinnati though it is not clear when Messi will resume training.
Next highlighted will be how the team functions without their inspiring leader when they will play with Chile on September 6 and four days later with Colombia. The depth of this squad is about to be tested but there is legitimacy in the belief that young talents might seize the opportunity.

After the Copa America 2024 final, Messi healed from his ankle injury; hence he was omitted from the team to focus on complete recuperation from it. Therefore, this might be an opportunity for people like Alejandro Garnacho and Giuliano Simeone among others, or Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez since these are some of the players who will eventually have to take his place.
In the 2024 Copa America final, Messi hurt his leg but thankfully his country won in that particular match.
The answer is in the affirmative since he has passed on the MLS All-Star match and Inter Miami’s League Cup defense.
September 6th when they meet Chile, and also on September 10th, when they take on Colombia.
