IPL 2024: Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans by 6 wickets
The Gujarat Titans, champions of the 2022 IPL season, were brought crashing down to earth on Wednesday night in Ahmedabad. Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans on their home ground yesterday in the Tata IPL match. The Delhi Capitals completely outplayed them in every department, bowling them out for a meager 89 runs before chasing down the target in a mere 8.5 overs with six wickets to spare. This emphatic victory by the Capitals highlights potential weaknesses in the Titans’ batting lineup, raising concerns for their title defense.
Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals captain, won the toss and chose to field first, which proved to be a masterstroke. The Titans’ batting difficulties began early, as they lost skipper Shubman Gill cheaply to Ishant Sharma. The powerplay became a misery for Gujarat, with wickets dropping in clumps. Openers Gill and Wriddhiman Saha were out within the first four overs, followed by quick dismissals of Abhinav Manohar and Shahrukh Khan thanks to some brilliant bowling by Capitals spinner Tristan Stubbs. By the end of the powerplay, the Titans were down 30/4.
Gujarat’s nightmare continued, as none of their batsmen were able to form a significant partnership. Rashid Khan, with a fighting knock of 31 runs, was the sole bright spot in an otherwise disappointing batting performance. The rest of the lineup struggled to capitalize, thanks to tight bowling and poor shot selection. Mukesh Kumar was the pick of the Delhi Capitals bowlers, taking three wickets for 14 runs. Ishant Sharma and Tristan Stubbs took two wickets each, demolishing the Titans’ batting order with clinical accuracy.
Easy chase for Delhi Capitals
Chasing a mediocre target of 90 runs, the Delhi Capitals’ openers, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Prithvi Shaw, began cautiously. However, they immediately shifted gears, capitalizing on the Titans’ bowling mistakes. Both batsmen were in their twenties, but their efforts meant that the required run rate was easily met. Shai Hope and Rishabh Pant then took control, leading the squad comfortably. The chase was completed in just 8.5 overs, with Pant undefeated on 16 runs. This strong victory not only strengthens the Capitals’ position in the points standings but also serves as a warning to other teams about their hitting abilities.
Following the setback, the Gujarat Titans admitted their shortcomings. Captain Shubman Gill admitted that the batters had sole responsibility for their collapse, claiming that the pitch played no role. David Miller, another senior player, agreed with Gill, stating that the pitch was slightly sticky but not unplayable. He expressed concern with the team’s lack of intent and bad shot selection, particularly on the powerplay.
Gujarat Titans was outplayed
This thumping by the Delhi Capitals highlights flaws in the Gujarat Titans’ batting order. In the absence of crucial players such as Hardik Pandya and Mohammed Shami, they appear to have become unduly reliant on Gill for runs and Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma for bowling breakthroughs. While Gill has been reliable at the top of the order, the absence of contributions from other batsmen is a source of concern. The team’s scoring rate, the lowest in the competition, emphasizes their difficulty in scoring huge runs.
Despite the big defeat, Gujarat Titans batsman David Miller remained positive about the team’s possibilities. He noted that despite being written off originally, the club had made it to the finals the previous two seasons. Miller feels that if each player plays to their full capacity, the Titans can still turn things around. However, the squad must solve its batting issues soon, particularly its over-reliance on a few players, and find a means to score runs consistently.
This lopsided match between the Delhi Capitals and the Gujarat Titans served as a strong reminder that the Tata IPL is a game of thin margins. Delhi Capitals beat Gujarat Titans and proved that they are a strong contender for Tata IPL 2024. While the Titans remain a powerful squad, they must address their batting issues if they are to have any realistic chance of retaining their crown. The Capitals, on the other hand, have emerged as strong candidates thanks to their all-around performance, and their resounding victory over the reigning champions will definitely increase their confidence as the tournament goes on.
