The former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin raised the national discourse after going public with his concerns regarding the treatment of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, with the BCCI being the subject of his criticisms. In a forceful statement, Ashwin slams BCCI for being“insensitive and poor in communication” and has demanded transparency and respect in handing the transition of the legends of Indian cricket.
BCCI must have given some clear indication regarding its ODI roadmap for the 2027 World Cup right after Kohli and Rohit announced their T20I retirements post the 2024 T20 World Cup, Ashwin alleged in his latest YouTube video.
According to him, the board should have offered both players clarity about their roles in the one-day setup.
“Had they been informed during their T20I retirement, they could have made informed decisions about their ODI futures,” Ashwin explained.
He believed that this lack of clarity created extremely unnecessary speculation around the duo’s future.
Ashwin slams BCCI regarding the absence of a well-structured knowledge transfer (KT) process between the senior players and the younger talent.
He said that without any formal mentoring structures, India would lose the wonderful experience of their veterans who have played under pressure and been able to achieve almost global success.
Ashwin clarified that “knowledge transfer is not about learning cricket shots-about pressure management, leadership, and endurance in a long career,”.
| Category | Key Issue Highlighted by Ashwin |
| Communication | Lack of clarity on ODI roles for seniors |
| Knowledge Transfer | No structured KT process between players |
| Respect for Seniors | Inadequate recognition for veteran contributions |
| Leadership Transition | Unclear communication on captaincy changes |
Continuing his criticism, Ashwin slams BCCI for ignoring the stature of both Kohli and Rohit.
He asserted that decisions regarding their entry into the ODI layup should not be based solely on the form of the younger players or on the IPL.
“Both Kohli and Rohit have earned the right to be in the team. They deserve respect and clear communication about their future,” Ashwin said.
Indeed, this is the general thought shared by many fans that this transition phase in Indian cricket should merit respect and transparency.
Ashwin’s statement provoked a huge debate just post he spoke on the removal of Rohit Sharma from ODI captainship just before India toured Australia. He indicates that it might be a part of that long-term planning for a young leaderlike Shubman Gill; Ashwin’s venomous attack on the BCCI’s mode of communication in implementing the decision was, however, quite severe.
“Rohit deserves to be captain, but if there is a new vision, that is fine-just communicate it properly,” he said.
There, Ashwin comments upon a style of management that lacks much clarity in its thinking, putting doubt even in senior players about their own roles.
In Ashwin’s view, this is not merely about individual players but about the culture of Indian cricket as a whole. By keeping players uninformed about long-term plans, the BCCI risks fosters confusion, insecurity, and speculation.
He feels that with a clear roadmap, both senior players and younger ones could begin to think of their mental preparations and strategic plans in terms of the next World Cup cycle.
Ashwin, with concern for BCCI, has used the instruments of criticism with which to express himself. He is interested in creating improvements that encourage continuity, transparency, and respect inside the system.
He noted that the earlier coaching eras—under Rahul Dravid and Gautam Gambhir- could not escape such problems because the KT structures were not formally in place.
By institutionalizing mentorship and fostering clear channels for teammates with varied experiences to communicate freely, Ashwin can find ways to outmatch the generation gap that often hinders consistent performance in major tournaments.
With India standing at the threshold of a great opportunity before the 2027 World Cup, Ashwin slams BCCI as a wake-up call for them. His words remind all that cricket is not only about talent-it is about management, clarity, and respect.
The presence of Kohli and Rohit will be of great help for India in grooming its future champions with the advent of the young stars Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Rinku Singh.
